Jano

Jano has always known what his life would be. There is work to be done, people and animals that sometimes need his help, a village that is home, and Tandia, who might one day become something more.

Then a warning arrives from beyond the Sou’ Reaches, and the comfortable certainty of that life begins to disappear.

Travelling with Dannid, an old friend and Roamer, Jano leaves behind everything familiar and discovers a Sinterland far larger and more complicated than he imagined. There are great cities and ancient customs, wealth and poverty, honour and ambition, and powerful people manoeuvring for still more power.

Through it all, Jano remains remarkably unimpressed.

He has the Gift, certainly, and perhaps rather more of it than anyone yet understands. But Jano measures the world by simpler things: friendship, kindness, obligation and doing what needs to be done.

Along the way there are friendships made, assumptions challenged and glimpses of forces moving well beyond Jano’s understanding. His Gift, largely an unremarkable part of life until now, also begins attracting attention from people who recognise something in it that Jano himself does not.

By the time his journey brings him to the School of the Right, the boy who left the Sou’ Reaches has already begun to see his world rather differently.
