The foregoing memorandum, attributed to Iwamoto Eiji, appears unremarkable at first reading.
It is brief, procedural and entirely without ornament.
Yet, within the context of Meiji-era Japan, it represents a quiet but decisive departure from prevailing practice.
During the 1870s, the transmission of Western technical knowledge into Japan was mediated principally through government translation bureaus, official schools and commissioned scholars.
The dominant approach sought equivalence in language first: to render foreign terms into Japanese, often through newly coined compounds or adapted classical forms.
This work was both necessary and, in many instances, admirable.
It was, however, frequently undertaken apart from the machine itself.
Terms were standardised before they had been demonstrated in practice.
The Iwamoto method reverses this order.
What is presented here is not a theory of language, but a discipline of work.
The insistence that a term be attached only after the part or method has been identified, handled and observed in operation establishes a chain of verification uncommon for its time.
It binds word to function, and function to physical reality.
In doing so, it avoids an entire class of errors that might otherwise propagate unchallenged through printed texts and formal instruction.
From a modern perspective, this approach anticipates what would later be recognised in engineering and technical education as practice-led standardisation.
Terminology is not merely translated.
It is validated through operation.
The result is a vocabulary that is both stable and transferable.
It is also worth noting the dual preservation embedded within the method.
The foreign term is retained, ensuring continuity with source materials and international practice.
A corresponding form, suitable for speech within the House, is established locally and accompanied by a concise functional description.
This ensures usability within the workshop without sacrificing precision.
Together, these elements enabled the Iwamoto House to operate across linguistic boundaries while maintaining fidelity to the original source.
They also supported the development of an internal technical record that could be replicated with minimal degradation—a matter of considerable importance during a period of rapid industrial adoption.
In contrast to many contemporary bureaucratic efforts, which tended towards early standardisation and broad dissemination, the Iwamoto method privileges correctness at the point of origin.
Its establishment is slower.
Its maintenance requires remarkably little correction.
The long-term advantage is evident:
A consistent working language, grounded in verified practice, capable of extending across machines, trades and sites.
There is no indication that this memorandum was intended as a wider reform.
It reads instead as a record of necessity—an attempt to resolve immediate difficulties encountered during the installation and operation of imported machinery.
That such a method should have emerged within a commercial workshop, rather than an official institution, is itself worthy of note.
In retrospect, the memorandum’s significance lies less in the terminology it produced than in the process by which that terminology was established.
It records an early instance of a House assuming responsibility not only for the language of its tools, but for the understanding from which that language derived.
