Japan was required to reconcile older forms of identity with the demands of a modern state.

Names, which had long served local, relational and situational purposes, were compelled to become persistent and legible across domains, institutions and borders. As a result, more than one form of a name may appear in the text. These variations are intentional.

What follows is offered as reference material. It is not required reading, but it may assist the reader in understanding how identity, hierarchy and cultural frame are being signalled at different moments in the narrative.

1. Japanese Usage (Default)

In Japanese usage, the family name precedes the given name. This reflects the primacy of the house and remains the natural order in Japanese speech and thought.

Accordingly, characters are most often presented in this form when the narrative is aligned with Japanese custom, the household or domestic affairs.

Examples:

Iwamoto Jirō

Iwamoto Keiko

Iwamoto Masanori

Matsumoto Heizō

This order applies regardless of class or the historical depth of the family name. Western and Bureaucratic Usage

With the expansion of Western institutions, international commerce and foreign correspondence, Japanese names were often reordered for practical reasons. In such contexts, the given name may precede the family name to conform to Western expectations.

This inversion is functional rather than philosophical. It serves the system being addressed and does not indicate a change in identity.

Examples:

Jirō Iwamoto (business cards, correspondence, registers)

Keiko Iwamoto (Western-facing documents)

Where this order appears, it should be read as accommodation rather than assimilation.

3. Spoken English and Forms of Address

When speaking English, the order of introduction may vary, but forms of address remain significant.

A Japanese speaker may say:

“I am Iwamoto Jirō.”

or, when accommodating a Western listener,

“I am Jirō Iwamoto.”

In both cases, correct address by others remains:

Mr Iwamoto

Use of the given name is never assumed.

Examples:

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Mr Iwamoto.”

“Please, call me Jirō.”

(an explicit invitation)

Such invitations signal trust, equality or personal regard and should be read as deliberate.

Errors or awkwardness in address, particularly by foreigners, are sometimes left uncorrected. These moments are not incidental and may reflect unfamiliarity, presumption or cultural distance.

4. Narrative Alignment

Where both name orders appear in close proximity, they refer to the same individual. The difference lies not in who is named, but in whose system governs the moment.

As a general guide:

Japanese social space favours family name first.

Western systems favour given name first.

The household favours continuity.

Given-name address marks permission, not familiarity.

Names, like language itself, reveal the frame in which power, respect and understanding are operating.

5. Forms of Address

Forms of address in this work are not interchangeable. They indicate hierarchy, distance, familiarity and intent.

Address by family name is correct and neutral. It is the default form in both Japanese and Western contexts when respect or formality is required.

Examples:

Iwamoto-san

Mr Iwamoto

Use of the given name is never assumed. It is offered, not taken.

When a character says:

“Please, call me Jirō.”

this marks a deliberate shift. Such an invitation signals trust, equality or personal regard. It does not imply informality in the modern sense and may exist alongside continued respect.

Addressing a person by their given name without invitation may indicate ignorance, presumption or an attempt at dominance. Such moments are sometimes left uncorrected within the narrative. Where they occur, they are intentional and may be read as diagnostic of character or culture.

Honorifics follow customary Japanese usage and are applied consistently. Their absence is as meaningful as their presence.

As with name order, forms of address reveal not only who is speaking, but the system within which the speaker believes they are operating.

6. Function, Trust and Transparent Names

The requirement under Meiji law that all persons register a family name introduced a formal distinction between identity as lived and identity as recorded. For many individuals whose lives had been formed entirely within the discipline of the ie, this distinction mattered.

Those who had long been known by function and trust, rather than by genealogy, often adopted the minimum form necessary to satisfy the state. In such cases, the registered name did not assert lineage, independence or elevation. It served only to render the individual legible beyond the household.

For example, Iwamoto Masanori’s man Kondō registered his name as his surname and remained known simply as Kondō. This mechanism was used occasionally by men and women who occupied senior, trusted positions within the ie. For them, the adoption of an additional or newly constructed family name would have represented a departure from duty rather than compliance with law. Their identity was already complete within the house. To embellish it would have suggested a self apart from service, a notion inconsistent with their understanding of honour.

When he is asked his name he would reply:

“My name is Kondō.”

And if asked his family name, he would respond:

“My family name is Kondō.”

Within this work, such names are treated as transparent. They are present where required, but deliberately unaccented. They do not indicate distance from the house, nor exclusion from continuity. On the contrary, they mark a form of belonging grounded in responsibility rather than descent.

As the narrative moves beyond the constraints of the ie and toward the emergence of the ki, this distinction becomes more pronounced. The ki does not absorb people through names. It recognises them through participation, capability and trust. In this sense, the retention of a minimal or functional name should be read not as resistance to change, but as fidelity to a way of belonging that predates the register and survives it.

Names here do not confer identity. They record it.
