Where later commentators describe the <em data-start=\"1736\" data-end=\"1740\">ie<\/em> as &#8220;wealth-holding,&#8221; the archival record indicates that it was more accurately understood as <strong data-start=\"1834\" data-end=\"1852\">wealth-bearing<\/strong>, with assets treated as instruments of obligation rather than objects of ownership.<\/p><p data-section-id=\"9a3lg7\" data-start=\"1943\" data-end=\"1971\"><strong>The Meiji Incompatibility<\/strong><\/p><p>The Meiji state did not seek to dismantle the <em data-start=\"2019\" data-end=\"2023\">ie<\/em> as a social institution.<\/p><p>It simply could not recognise it as a legal one.<\/p><p>The introduction of cadastral surveying, cash taxation and individual title required a legally identifiable entity capable optimisation.<\/p><p>Governance presumes responsibility and restraint.<\/p><p>The foundation&#8217;s charter reflects this distinction precisely.<\/p><p>Trustees are prohibited from personal enrichment and constrained to act solely in furtherance of the foundation&#8217;s stated purpose.<\/p><p>Their authority closely resembles that of the traditional House Head: extensive in responsibility, restrained in personal benefit.<\/p><p data-section-id=\"ca02p1\" data-start=\"3992\" data-end=\"4025\"><strong>Continuity Without Inheritance<\/strong><\/p><p>From an economic perspective, the foundation eliminated the single greatest structural vulnerability of the <em data-start=\"4135\" data-end=\"4139\">ie<\/em>: succession.<\/p><p>As Dr Takamori&#8217;s analysis demonstrates, repeated inheritance events constitute systemic risk.<\/p><p>Each transfer introduces uncertainty, fragmentation and the possibility of external capture.<\/p><p>The foundation removes inheritance as an institutional mechanism, replacing it with perpetual organisational continuity.<\/p><p>Death ceases to be an economic event.<\/p><p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p><p>The <strong
