has been observed that the direct rendering of foreign mechanical terms into our language is insufficient when undertaken apart from the machine itself.<\/p><p data-start=\"871\" data-end=\"993\">Words taken from English, French or German texts do not, by themselves, carry the full measure of the thing they describe.<\/p><p data-start=\"995\" data-end=\"1068\">Where such terms are encountered, the following method is to be observed.<\/p><p data-start=\"1070\" data-end=\"1116\">A term shall not be fixed from the book alone.<\/p><p data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1220\">The part or method to which it refers must first be identified upon the machine or within the process.<\/p><p data-start=\"1222\" data-end=\"1346\">Its movement, its connection to other parts, and its place or purpose within the operation are to be understood through use.<\/p><p data-start=\"1348\" data-end=\"1470\">Only when the part or method has been observed in operation, and its function confirmed, shall the term be attached to it.<\/p><p data-start=\"1472\" data-end=\"1592\">The foreign word is to be preserved exactly as written in the original work, so that reference may always be maintained.<\/p><p data-start=\"1594\" data-end=\"1680\">A corresponding form, suitable for speech within the House, shall then be established.<\/p><p data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"1829\">This shall be accompanied by a brief description of function, sufficient to guide a man in its proper use, but extending no further than necessary.<\/p><p data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"1872\">The order of the work shall therefore be:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1874\" data-end=\"2013\"><li data-section-id=\"fezmug\" data-start=\"1874\" data-end=\"1906\">The thing is first understood.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"17obwuv\" data-start=\"1907\" data-end=\"1958\">The understanding is then confirmed in operation.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1uz7q3r\" data-start=\"1959\" data-end=\"1981\">The name is applied.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"sa8x1n\" data-start=\"1982\" data-end=\"2013\">The name is fixed in writing.<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2015\" data-end=\"2082\">\u00a0<\/p><p data-start=\"2015\" data-end=\"2082\">Once fixed, the term shall not be altered without sufficient cause.<\/p><p data-start=\"2084\" data-end=\"2242\">All such entries are to be recorded in a consistent form, so that another man, not present at the machine, may take up the work and proceed without confusion.<\/p><p data-start=\"2244\" data-end=\"2386\">It is to be understood that the purpose of this method is not translation alone, but the establishment of a working language within the House.<\/p><p data-start=\"2388\" data-end=\"2466\">That language must be capable of passing from one man to another without loss.<\/p><p data-start=\"2468\" data-end=\"2542\">It must bind the book, the machine and the hand to the same understanding.<\/p><p data-start=\"2544\" data-end=\"2594\">Where this method is observed, the work will hold.<\/p><p data-start=\"2596\" data-end=\"2677\">Where it is neglected, error will multiply, however correct the words may data-end=\"1134\">The dominant approach sought equivalence in language first: to render foreign terms into Japanese, often through newly coined compounds or adapted classical forms.<\/p><p data-start=\"1136\" data-end=\"1199\">This work was both necessary and, in many instances, admirable.<\/p><p data-start=\"1201\" data-end=\"1270\">It was, however, frequently undertaken apart from the machine itself.<\/p><p data-start=\"1272\" data-end=\"1342\">Terms were standardised before they had been demonstrated in practice.<\/p><p data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"1383\">The Iwamoto method these elements enabled the Iwamoto House to operate across linguistic boundaries while maintaining fidelity to the original source.<\/p><p data-start=\"2679\" data-end=\"2878\">They also supported the development of an internal technical record that could be replicated with minimal degradation\u2014a matter of considerable importance during a period of rapid industrial adoption.<\/p><p data-start=\"2880\" data-end=\"3068\">In contrast to many contemporary bureaucratic efforts, which tended towards early standardisation and broad dissemination, the Iwamoto method privileges correctness at the point of origin.<\/p><p data-start=\"3070\" data-end=\"3098\">Its establishment is slower.<\/p><p data-start=\"3100\" data-end=\"3154\">Its maintenance requires remarkably little
